On a typical day, Vox Nova has upward of 100 comments. Of those 100 comments, at least 5 will be so inflamatory as to start a flame war. If I don’t want to have to check comments every 15 minutes, don’t want to go to pre-moderation, and don’t want flame wars, turning off comments is the best option. Pre-moderation is an all or nothing option with wordpress, as you are probably aware.

Ha! Looks like they’ve finally pulled the plug on my comments over there and opted for all out censorship. Morning’s Minion apparently doesn’t want to be exposed as a fraud for pretending to be Irish (one of the reasons, I’m sure).

I have another good question. Why do the “moderators” parse out what they consider to be rude and obscene comments (sometimes comments that merely disagree with them) when they engage in rude and obscene commenting themselves. It really is a cesspool of hypocrisy over there.

But, yes. I have noticed that they do set the ability to comment off many times. I think that goes back to the narcissistic behavior of some bloggers. All they want to do it talk and share their opinions so that they can read over them and enjoy them without distraction.

i Agree. I commented on the latest post but after one of the leading contributors is calling Palin a Catholic Apostate (by the way we all say things we wish we could take back and I suspect this is the case here) I think there might be a attempt to cool off things
